Photography evaluation:

The work i have produced in this topic reflect a lot of deep meanings and didn’t take and edit them because i could. I took lots of shots and edited them all, but only one or two really stood out to me during the produces of editing. Here are the 2 which i find to be some of my best work so far:

Lego man:
This one my favourite picture i have produced so far. I love how it looks, the texture of the building and giant lego man himself. The actual technical parts of it like how the lego mans hand is holding onto the building but still seems to be standing behind the building. The symbolical aspect of this photos is that it suggests how materialism has taken over our society, how desperate everyone is for money or the next fashion style. It shows how over time our demand for man made products has made us a slave to them, the giant lego man shows this by being bigger than the building in the photo and how the tables have turned. Another good symbolic element of this photo is that because the lego man is a toy, it represents childhood, and how materialism doesn’t really matter back at a young age.

Bollards:
This photo was also a choice favourite of mine. I took the photo in Harlow town, if it was just a unedited photo, it would be just two bollards in the street, I sectioned out the background and made it black and white, and made the bollards different colours. The technical side of  this photo is good, how the colours of the bollards are completely separate from the rest of the surroundings which are black and white. The symbolic meaning behind the colourful bollards are that how society has to have everything in plain colours, normally black and white, the bollards were originally black with a white ring around them, by changing the colour schemes around you get a massive contrast between societies and possibly classes.
I did a lot of research into the topic of what the pictures i made were about, i started by looking at the target audience, who i wanted these pictures to appeal too and ultimately have an impact on. The first photo i wanted to effect over materialistic people, people who have lots of items made by man. Hopefully it will have an impact on them if they manage to understand the symbolic meaning behind it. The second image is to grab the attention of authorities, anyone working in public serves or people who have to see items like the bollards everyday. Seeing this image and noticing that the bollards are different colours    could help try shed light on what the picture means, how dull colours maybe try to sensor people?

The actual production of the photos was pretty straight forward in terms of taking the photos and editing. The taking of the second image was not really planned, just randomly shot, and i find that makes the picture so much better than if it was intended or planned. The first photo the editing was quite tricky to get the lego man and building the same size and in proportion.

Lenses:

A lens is an optical device which transmits and refracts light. a simple lens which consist of a single optical element. a compound lens an array of simple lens elements. Lens’s come in a variety of shapes which manipulate the overall outcome of the photo and are made in different types of material like glass and plastic.

Lighting:
Lighting is a vital component in taking photographs. 3 point lighting is a very basic setup for lighting. 3 lights are needed to produce this set up and is ideal for a good depth in shots.
The main lights for this are the key light, fill light and back light.

3 point light

The key light is used for the main light source. it is placed to one side quite high up to replicate the sun on a clear day.
The fill light is used

Flash:
The flash used in photography can be a vital part of creating a great photograph. a flash in general is a quick burst of artificial light used to lighten up an otherwise dimly lit surrounding.

There are many different types of flash’s, single use (disposable) flash or bulbs, attachable flash devices among more. In the past underpowered  used to be used for flash’s

Tripod:
A tripod is used to steady a camera when taking a photo. Normally a 3 legged device which cameras of all shapes and sizes can be fitted onto.
Tripods are vital in photography for taking photos as still and proportional as possible.

Aperture:
In general, aperture is a hole in which light travels through in order for a photo to be taken on a camera. the more or less light determines the focus and quality of the photo.

The aperture stop of a photographic lens can be adjusted to control the amount of light reaching the film or image sensor. In combination with variation of shutter speed, the aperture size will regulate the film’s degree of exposure to light. Typically, a fast shutter speed will require a larger aperture to ensure sufficient light exposure, and a slow shutter speed will require a smaller aperture to avoid excessive exposure.

Shutter speed:
Shutter speed is simply the speed in which the shutter on a camera operates. The quicker the speed the sharper the photo will become. the slower the speed the more blurred the photo. Shutter speed plays an important part in the cameras function, it controls how long light is let into the camera when taking a photo, and in conjunction with aperture controls how much light is let it. with a combination of these two the possibility’s are endless.

Fast shutter speed:
- Very sharp, in-depth and detailed

Slow shutter speed:
- Objects closer to the camera are clear, background objects are blurred.

Focus point:
This is the point of which the photo is focused on. depending on the depth of field

Focus length:
Also known as depth of field, is how much of the image (beyond the focus point) is visible, blurred or defined.

ISO:
The ISO is the speed in which light reacts to the film used in cameras. The sensitivity of the iso is on a numeric scale.

Digital manipulation:
This is any sort of editing to a photo, such as in photoshop,

There has been a big change in cameras over the past years. Originally used with a photographic film (light-sensitive coated film) which reacts to light, diffrent shutter speeds, lens’s and exposure produces the photo. A digital camera uses light sensors which get saves to flash memory.

The main differences between digital and film cameras are the way in which they work mechanically.  The lens and shutter are mainly the same on both types, the only main difference is that light-sensitive film is used in film cameras and memory sticks are used in digital cameras.

This image shows how a photo is taken. light is let in through the lens to an infrared filter and then color filter.

Film camera

This image shows a camera which uses a film. It works differently than a digital camera, it does not have sensors and color filters. It is purely mechanical.

boxer

This first photo is simmilar to one of the photos i published in the Band Photography blog post, it shows lots of negative space from the boxer and the arena and bright lights behind him. The picture being in black and white emphasis this.

If you examin the photo closely you will notice that the photo was snapped when the boxer was warming up, jumping up and down or just moving around. A quick shutter speed is able to pick up these movments as the shutter speed is faster than the boxer is moving.

Two dirt bikers

This amazing photo here shows two dirt bike racers flying through the air with great speed.

The first thing I noticed about this photo when i first saw it was the clear distinction bewteen the background and the two bikes, you can clearly see that the background is slightly blurred as the bikes are in near perfect quality. This effect is down to the work of how the photo was shot and the shutter speed of the camera

The-Devil-Wears-Prada1

This photo was taken by band/musician photographer Taylor Foiles [ http://www.taylorfoiles.com/ ]
Taylor Foiles specializes in taking top quality photos for many bands and musicians of all genres as well as being in a band himself, which gave him a better understanding of the musical photography scene and what his clients expect of him as a musical photographer. a few shots can be seen on the website above but all his work are on social networking sites like Facebook, Myspace etc.

This Photo was definitely  one of my favorite out of the work i have seen so far from him. utilizing such effects as Fish eye lens to create a ’round’ look on the photo focusing mainly on the bottom part of the photo (keyboard). the unique lighting effects which are present here are the work of the band and their lighting manager, but as lights and special effects change constantly in heavy metal concerts, it takes skill to take a amazing photo like this one at the precise moment the timing is perfect.

As the photo was taken from the side of the stage, the artist would have needed special permission to be at stage side, He could have either been employed to take the photo set for the band or maybe he is a friend of the band and therefore might know exactly what is expected of the band, hence how he knew when exactly to take this particular photo.

One of the unique points about this photo is the slight blurred effect in the background and on the man directly in front of the camera. This is the result of a shutter speed which is slower than the movement of the band on stage which causes a unique blur effect. The position which the man is standing is probably nothing to do with the fact that photos are being taken and to ‘pose’ but that he is caught up in the music and is expressing himself as are his fellow band members, this point comes back to the perfect timing of the photo and shows of the skill of the photographer which results with a photo which is full of energy and power.

gnarly

The first thing you notice about this photo is the huge difference on each side of the image, on the right side you have the singer, and the left a blank open space with the crowd beneath. There is a massive negative space were the is just nothing on one half of the photo, this makes the photo so much more powerful. Creating negative spacings such like in this photo is a key element in artistic composition. The reason this photo was taken in black and white or was edited to turn out black and white was the emphasis the negative spacing between the singer and the clear sky.

A slight wide angle camera lens (fish eye) might have been used when this photo was taken, if you examine the crowd closely you can see that there is a slightly rounded look to them.
